R-410A

R-410A is the dominant residential and light-commercial refrigerant in North America — being phased out by 2025 for new equipment under the EPA AIM Act. Operates at ~50% higher pressure than R-22, requiring POE oil and pressure-rated tools.

HCPro recommendation:

R-32 (A2L)

R-32 is the leading A2L (mildly flammable, low-GWP) replacement for R-410A in mini-splits and residential heat pumps. Pressure profile is similar to R-410A but A2L handling protocols apply (no open flames near refrigerant, leak detection critical).

HCPro recommendation:

R-454B (A2L)

R-454B is the leading A2L replacement for R-410A in central residential AC and light commercial systems (Carrier, Lennox, Trane). Lower GWP than R-32. Similar handling requirements to R-32.

HCPro recommendation:

R-134a

R-134a is the standard for automotive A/C and some refrigeration systems. NEVER use POE in automotive A/C — most auto compressors require PAG. HVAC and refrigeration applications use POE.

HCPro recommendation (HVAC/refrigeration):

R-1234yf

R-1234yf is the automotive A/C replacement for R-134a (lower GWP). Used in vehicles model year 2015+. Most automotive applications use POE-1234yf or PAG oil per OEM spec.

R-22 (Phased Out — Retrofit Only)

R-22 production ended January 2020 under the Clean Air Act. Service-only allowed using recovered or reclaimed stock. Most R-22 work today is retrofit to R-410A or R-32.

HCPro recommendation for R-22 retrofit:

  • Flash Flush to clean mineral oil from the line set
  • RPO-32 POE as the new system oil
  • New TXV or service ports rated for the higher pressure

R-404A and Refrigeration Blends

R-404A is a refrigeration blend used in commercial freezers and low-temp refrigeration. Being phased out for low-GWP alternatives like R-448A and R-449A. POE oil compatible.
